Festivals

Please select the tabs below to take a look at what functions and festivals the Mauritian Marathi Society celebrate.

Ganesh Chaturthi

ganesh

This function is the celebration of Lord Ganesh. The Ganesh Chaturthi Festival marks the special day when Ganesh is honoured everywhere in the world. Prayers are performed over 2 days, and a fast is also observed before, during and after the Ganesh Chaturthi Festival. Songs and dances are performed during the festival in dedication of Ganesh, and the final blessing is the submerging of the Ganesh Murthi into water.

The year 2007 was a landmark year for the MMS with its first ever procession with the Ganesh Murthi around Palmers Green. This particular moment was a smashing success and saw great numbers of followers and onlookers enjoy the occasion. Since that moment, each procession is now done within the vicinity of the Darji Mitra Mandal, with the submerging taking place outside the hall, in a specially built tank.

Maha Shivratri

shivratri

The auspicious festival of Maha Shivaratri is celebrated with devotion and religious fervour all over India and beyond. Though fasting and worship of Shiva Linga with a ritual bath remain the common feature of Shivaratri celebrations at all places, minor variations due to regional difference can be observed in different countries.

In Mauritius, for instance, Maha Shivaratri is celebrated in a big way for over three days. A large number of the island's Hindu population makes a pilgrimage to the holy volcanic lake, Grand Bassin and make food sacrifices and stockpile vessels of the holy water.

Chatrapati Shivaji Day

shivaji

This function is a celebration of the great warrior himself, Shivaji Maharaj. This function tends to take place between May & June, but varies depending on availability of a hall. The event showcases the history and journey of Shivaji himself, with performances, speeches and videos being played to highlight his achievements.

Diwali

diwali

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a major festival in the Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism religions. This is also known as the festival of lights. It symbolises the victory of good over evil, and lamps are lit as a sign of celebration and hope for humankind. Celebrations focus on lights and lamps, particularly traditional dīpa or deeya. This festival usually takes place in the month of November.

MMS Outing & BBQ

The MMS has recently started another event for the community to celebrate. The first one took 2009 at the Goan Centre, Tottenham where a Family Day took place. This also coincided with the football match between the MMS Youngsters and Elders. Another BBQ took place in September 2012 at the same venue, which was another success.

In 2008 the MMS visited East Beach, Shoeburyness for a day trip with its members. This event was a smashing success and the occasion as a whole was fabulous. The weather was perfect and everyone who came along enjoyed themselves to the max.

MMS Cup - Veterans vs Youngsters

The MMS Shield is a recent addition to the MMS Events calendar. This usually takes place during the Spring, Summer and/or Autumn no matter what the weather is like. This game of football is played over the full 90 minutes and pits the MMS Youngsters against the Elders. This match up started in 2008 during an family day event at the Goan Centre. On the day the Youngsters triumphed 6-4 to take the first ever MMS Shield.

The Sheild is currently being held by the veterens.

Guddi Padwa

guddi_padwa

Guddi Padwa is celebrated on the first day of the chaitra month (month in the Hindu calendar), and is celebrated by maharastrians and marathis all around the world. This is also the first day of the marathi calendar. The festival marks the start of a prosperous new year and is considered as one of the most auspicious days by hindus. It is a day of great festivity and rejoicing. People get up early and clean their houses, decorating them with intricate rangoli designs. Many houses decorate the pots with coconuts, flowers and mango leaves, symbolising nature's bounty to all.

On this day a pole is erected named "Gudi" in front of the house. Padwa is another name for "Pratipada", the first day of the lunar month. A new cloth is tied on the Gudi, a metal vessel is put on to it and a garland of sweets is hung on it.
